Ellen was born in 1864 in the small village of Bildershaw, just outside West Auckland, County Durham
She was the eldest daughter of John (coalminer) and Anne Lamb
Having met Patrick when he arrived in the area, they married at West Auckland Registry Office on 24th March 1883 - Ellen was 19 years of age and Patrick 22 years old.
Their first born son John (who died before his second birthday) was born around November 1883 - so Ellen may have been pregnant when she got married - if not, then she fell pregnant straight away.
