Although you see the surname
O'DOWD showing on both these headstones, no explanation has been
found as to why. William was born a DOUD (Dowd) His parents were DOUD (Dowd) He served with the 3rd Btn Notts & Derby Regiment during WW1 and signed his name W Doud. However, when he married Jane Ann he married under the name of O'DOUD - why? His first daughter Mary Ellen was born (1920) DOUD, yet his last daughter Marie was born (1935) DOWD His elder brother Tom (see above) used the name DOWD. I have yet to find a headstone with the name DOUD being used. Even Patrick - Williams' father - died a DOWD, as did Ellen - Patrick's wife |
