JOHN DOWD (DOUD)
John, father of Patrick, unfortunately was deceased by the time Patrick married Ellen Lamb in 1883, therefore attempting to trace back further in the family is going to prove somewhat difficult.
We know from Patrick's marriage certificate that John was a "farmer". What kind of farmer has yet to be established, but it interesting to note that he is not classed as a "farm labourer". CLICK PICTURE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION
It's also interesting to note that the name DOUD is used instead of DOWD. We're not sure whether this was a spelling mistake by the registrar or the correct spelling, and more mystery surrounds the spelling in later years, as you will read through various events to come.
This is not the only time DOUD is used instead of DOWD

Extract from Patrick & Ellen's Marriage Certificate
It is believed, by today's surviving Dowd elders, that John was born in County Sligo Ireland around 1838-41, and if we are permitted to assume "averages" then tracing back from Patrick's marriage of 1883 when he was recorded as being 22 years of age, John was certainly alive in 1861 (the year of Patrick's birth), and would have been approximately 20 years old himself, which in turn makes John's year of birth - c1838-41.
One lead only has come to light during research, and that is of a JOHN DOWD (farmer) dying in 1880 (no place of death).
