William (Bill) Dowd

My father Bill, was born in St Helen Auckland on 19th April 1926. He was the eldest son to Harry and Ida Dowd.

He met my mother Sheila whilst he was stationed at Proteus Camp, Ollerton just after WW2. They married at Chesterfield Registrar Office, and settled down to married life in Barlborough.

They eventually finished up living in Creswell.

He was well known and respected in the village for various reasons:

•         the friendly village coalman (worked for George Pollard - coal merchant)
•         harmonica player (performed at the Albert Hall)
•         pub singer (performed in most clubs and pubs)
•         committee man (Star Social Club)

He passed away 15 March 1994
